Milky Way in the sky

Happening in the sky in
December'25

Session Times
6:30 PM in English
8:30 PM in Portuguese

  • December 4th - Full moon.

  • December 11th - Waning Quarter Moon.

  • December 20th - New Moon.

  • December 27th - First Quarter Moon.

  • December 6th - 8:30 PM Session - NIGHT OF THE GIANTS - The gas giants of the Solar System are different from Earth because we cannot land on them due to the intense pressure in their atmosphere.
They are the only planets larger than Earth and are located in the outermost regions of the Solar System.
Uranus and Neptune were discovered with telescopes, while Jupiter and Saturn can be seen with the naked eye. These planets have many moons due to their strong gravity. Although only Saturn has visible rings, all of them have rings orbiting around them.

  • December 13th to 20th - the best week to observe the Geminid Meteor Shower.
Peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower on the night of the 13th to the 14th with the Moon approximately 30% illuminated.

  • Jupiter is visible during the first session but is in better condition near the end of the second session.
We recommend the second session of the evening to observe him.

  • Saturn is in excellent viewing conditions during the first session of the evening.
In the second session , Saturn is already starting to appear too low, although it is still visible through the telescope.

  • The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is well positioned in the sky for good viewing; however, nights with a moon will always reduce the available contrast.

  • The Crab Nebula (M1) , a supernova remnant nebula, is observable in both the first and second evening sessions, preferably at 8:30 PM. To best observe this nebula, avoid days with a moon in the sky.

  • The Great Orion Nebula (M42) , a star-forming nebula, begins to appear at the end of the first session but is best observed at the end of the second session of the night. To observe this nebula well, avoid days with a moon in the sky; preferably choose nights at the beginning and end of December.
