This Christmas, Give Stars!
An unforgettable gift to explore the sky with our team at the Alqueva Lake Observatory.
The Christmas Star is a fascinating symbol, and its origin can be explained by several theories. One of the most intriguing suggests a combination of astronomical events, such as a conjunction of planets and a supernova.
The conjunction of the planets could indicate not only the location but also the significance of the event: the birth of a King in Palestine. Jupiter, known as the planet of kings, was positioned in the constellation Pisces, which is associated with the land of Palestine.
In addition, a supernova in the Andromeda galaxy, visible in dark skies, could have illuminated the night, especially in the eastern direction where Andromeda lies. This astronomical phenomenon coincides with the autumnal equinox, a period often accepted as the time of the birth of Christ, when shepherds were out in the fields.
